Internationally renowned jazz French Hornist and composer John Clark offers a workshop to help people create music without relying on notation or mimicry.
"I envision an environment where people can feel confident about creating music. Many people actually feel inhibited by their musical training: they feel able to play only by following a conductor, with printed music, or by duplicating music they’ve heard. We all have music within us, but sometimes it’s blocked. We don’t believe we have it, or we’re told that we don’t. The aim of this workshop is to enable people to get in touch with the music that’s inside them.
I propose to do this by demonstrating examples, and by encouraging people to express themselves. The workshop can include people from a range of backgrounds, ages, instruments, and styles. For example, perhaps someone has been a classical musician all their life and only ever played precisely what they were required to play. At the other end of the spectrum, sometimes people indulge in chaotic creation of sound without regard for how it actually sounds."
“If it sounds good, it is good.”
